Theater Productions
Theater Productions is a two semester course, which goes beyond the communication skills developed in Speech Arts . Although the class is geared towards cultivating acting/communication skills and better preparing students who plan to pursue this area professionally, the skills acquired can be applied to nearly every profession imaginable. Theater Production students develop/acquire/demonstrate the following objectives:
focus
relaxation
self-actualization
professionalism
attention to detail
BEING their character
speaking skills
confidence
critical and creative thinking
healthy risk-taking
basic understanding of theater
comfort with body
communication
passion
trust
open-mindedness
sensitivity to surroundings
listening/observing
critiquing
playing the moment
Students achieve these objectives in a variety of ways. Much of the class work is based on character development and interpretation through performance and dramatic exercises. Students select, perform, and critique a variety of monologues, dialogues and scene work. They have opportunities to perform publicly and to attend and critique community and professional productions/events. Former students and guests participate in forums, which introduce students to technical theater, the audition process and other aspects of theater as resources allow. Theater Productions students have publicly presented both children's productions and straight plays. Ms. Niz's fascination with living statues has lived on through her students who have appeared as living statues in Times Square and other locations, raising thousands of dollars for charity through their hard work, enormous talent and unprecedented professionalism.
